He went 27-6 with a 2.95 earned run average in 1990 and won the Cy Young Award. No pitcher has won 27 in a season since, and only ten had done it in the fifty-five years before. Oakland won 103 games that year and lost the World Series in four.

As a twenty-one-year-old rookie in the 1978 World Series he came in with two on and two out in the ninth and struck out Reggie Jackson on a nine-pitch at bat that is still shown. Seventeen seasons gave him 211 wins against 146, a 3.47 earned run average, 3,092 innings and 28 shutouts, ten years with the Dodgers and seven with the Athletics.

He wrote a book in 1982, Five O'Clock Comes Early, about being an alcoholic at twenty-three and getting treatment for it, which almost no active player had done in public. He died in 2014, at fifty-seven. The 2000 ballot gave him one vote of 499.
