Bill McGowan Marquee Hall of Fame 1992

The game logs name him behind the plate 1,657 times between April 16, 1925 and July 22, 1954, and there is no season missing in between. He is credited with a streak of some 2,500 consecutive games worked in the 1930s and 1940s, which the plate count alone cannot confirm, since it does not include the days he worked the bases.

He never played professionally, so the statistical record here has nothing else of him. He ran a school for umpires in Florida after the war, and a good part of the next generation of American League staff came out of it.

He died in December 1954, five months after his last game and still on the staff. He appeared on ten Hall of Fame ballots; the Veterans Committee elected him in 1992, thirty-eight years after his death.
