He pitched eighteen seasons and never for another club: 200 wins against 128, a 3.53 earned run average, 2,668 innings and 2,202 strikeouts. Only Bob Gibson and Jesse Haines have won more games for St. Louis, and only Gibson has struck out more men in the uniform. He led the National League in wins in 2009 and 2013 and in shutouts in 2013 and 2014.
He was a rookie relief pitcher in October 2006, having never started a major-league game, and finished both the Championship Series and the World Series — the last pitch of each was a strikeout, and the club won its first title in twenty-four years. He then moved to the rotation and won 19 or 20 games in four different seasons.
Elbow reconstruction cost him all of 2011 and an Achilles tear most of 2015, and he came back from both. He caught his 200th win in September 2023, in the last month he pitched, having spent most of the year at a 7.40 earned run average trying to get there. Two Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, three All-Star teams and the Roberto Clemente Award in 2020.
