The First World Series on the Radio

The 1921 World Series, an all-New York matchup between the Giants and the Yankees played entirely at the Polo Grounds, both teams' shared home park at the time, became the first World Series broadcast on the radio, beginning with Game 1 on October 5.

The broadcasts, relayed by announcers describing the action from the ballpark or from telegraph reports depending on the station, reached a radio audience that was still small but growing rapidly as the technology spread through the 1920s.

The Giants won the series five games to three, the last World Series played in a best-of-nine format; beginning in 1922, the World Series returned permanently to a best-of-seven format.
